A New Dimension in Orthodontic Treatment
Roth Orthodontics sets “facial change” as one of its treatment goals. Using the Ashura statue—a National Treasure in Japan and widely regarded as a symbol of beauty—as an example, we will explain the criteria we use to evaluate facial features.

01
For Asian individuals and women, the ratio of midface height to lower face height is ideally slightly less than 1:1. For individuals of European decent, the ratio is generally close to 1:1.

02
For Asian women, a ratio of approximately 1:1.85 is considered favorable. For men, the ratio is approximately 1:2.

03
Using the Sn-vertical line as a reference, the horizontal positions of the upper lip, lower lip, and chin (the tip of the mandible) are measured. With the upper lip at +5mm, the lower lip at +2mm, and the chin at -5mm, this individual falls within the ideal range.

04
The ratio of lower face height to the distance from the chin tip to the neck is ideally around 1:0.7.

The nose, lips, and chin (the tip of the mandible) are created by God. Da Vinci kept his painting Mona Lisa with him throughout his life. Was it her enigmatic mouth that continued to trouble him? Orthodontic treatment adds nothing to what the individual was born with.

We understand the temptation to add something to the chin! However, in this case, orthodontic treatment was used to rotate the mandible forward, bringing the chin into a more favorable position and increasing the distance between the neck and the chin. The key is to avoid excessive elongation of the lower facial height.

Prominent canines have long been recognized as a characteristic facial feature among some Japanese individuals. In the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn, the portrayal of Japanese characters— crooked teeth, glasses, and a camera—reflected the cultural perceptions of that era.

The mouth contains teeth that can be compared to beautiful, uncut gems. It is the orthodontist’s role to align them carefully while maintaining harmony with the overall balance of the face.
