The Roth Philosophy is an orthodontic diagnostic and treatment system developed by Dr. Ronald Rothbased on more than 40 years of clinical experience and research. The Roth Study Club Japan is an organization composed of clinical orthodontists who have incorporated the Roth Philosophy into their clinical practices.
A key feature of the Roth Philosophy is its emphasis on objective evaluation and diagnosis of jaw position and functional occlusion—factors that were not sufficiently emphasized in traditional orthodontic diagnosis—and the integration of these findings into orthodontic treatment planning. This approach enables orthodontists to develop more predictable diagnostic and treatment strategies, ultimately leading to improved treatment outcomes and higher-quality patient care.

RWISO 2007 Kyoto, Japan
Dr. Ronald Roth taught the Roth Philosophy around the world for more than 20 years. In Japan, a comprehensive course in orthodontic treatment based on the Roth Philosophy was launched in 1990 under the leadership of Dr. Kazumi Ikeda, who has served as the representative of our study club ever since. Subsequently, in 1996, the Roth Study Club Japan was established at the initiative of Dr. Ikeda, along with Dr. Masaru Sakai and Dr. Satoshi Adachi—who later served as course instructors—as a forum for graduates to gather, exchange information, and further their professional development in order to implement the Roth Philosophy in their own practices. Since then, our study club has held annual meetings where all members present clinical cases and continue their professional development, striving for continuous improvement through the exchange of clinical experiences.
Japanese members had been actively engaged in deepening their understanding of Dr. Roth’s philosophy through participation in annual international meetings with like-minded practitioners from around the world (see RWISO photo). Subsequently, we shifted our activities to the Roth Study Club International. We do not intend to rest on our laurels with respect to the high standards of care achieved in Japan; rather, we aspire to take a proactive role as global leaders.

We are committed to the serious pursuit of excellence in orthodontic treatment. There is still much to explore and learn. The very reason for this study club’s existence is not merely for members to prepare cases to meet the requirements for participation, but rather for each member to continue presenting their very best work at our annual meeting. We hope this study club will be a forum for clinicians who aspire to present cases they genuinely wish to share with their colleagues. Through this process, we continue to make progress each year while inspiring one another. Case presentation at the annual meeting is not an obligation; rather, it is intended to inspire one another.
